MeanderMe #6 - The Power of 'No'

Hello good soul,

We live in a world where there has never been such pressure on our time. We are more connected, with more opportunities for learning, entertainment, consumption and all types of distraction than ever before. I've been struggling with this ever-rising tide and explore how to navigate it here or in the World Inside below.

Another thing that's been on my mind is the apparent hypocrisy in my increased carbon footprint this year. I grapple with how to justify that here or in the World Around Us section below.

If you feel you received something of value from reading this newsletter and would like to support me to produce more of the same, you can contribute here: https://www.ronanloughney.com/support-me, or by sharing the email or this link with anyone you think might like it.

Thanks!

Saying 'no': Sometimes, the most affirmative thing we can do is to ruthlessly protect our time

Poem: Calm - the more we try to hold on the less we can

🌍 The World Around Us: Understanding and addressing social and environmental issues

Is there such a thing as sustainable travel? Emerson talked about the freedom we have to change our minds in line with new experiences and circumstances. I'll let you decide whether that's just another example of lofty and convenient self-justification or if there can be some justification in my improbably increased carbon footprint in the year of the pandemic.

ActionAble Update: We are back with a brand new event - From Activism to Activating, Wednesday12pm (GMT), 15/12/21 - showcasing our vision of taking action in a way that is fun, energising, inclusive and sustainable. Come and hear from my good friend and constant source of inspiration, Aneira Roose-McClew, who explains what has helped her find meaning and joy in taking action for people and planet.

Bio-Leadership Fellowship: Another call out for fellows for the 2022 cohort. If you want to be part of shaping a world that is truly regenerative for all, applications are now open. Sign up for a Discovery Call here.

🤪Playtime: Just for fun

Alternative Christmas: This playlist has almost nothing to do with Christmas, mainly because Christmas songs are f*&kin sh$t! (Yes, except for you Maria). For a break from the endless schmaltz, enjoy.

🔥Monthly challenge: Get involved with a challenge I am taking, designed to increase self-discipline and wellbeing

Early Riser: It might seem ironic to advocate trying to steal a march on the day after all of this anti-productivity and mindfulness talk, but there is an undeniable sense of spaciousness you can generate from waking up and starting your day in the quiet stillness of the early hours. What this means really of course is that this challenge has two parts, because it also entails going to bed early unless you want to quickly go insane.

I'll be getting up at 5am every day this month. Let me know if that sounds, well, not fun, but... of interest, and we can hold each other accountable.

The Edge of Being: Some people have the rare ability of seeming to have endless reserves of energy and enthusiasm. Eric Brown is one of those people. It's been a massive privilege getting to know him over the past year through my connection with the folks at High Existence. Eric consistently shows up for those around him, exhibiting a compassion and integrity I find alternately inspiring and unfathomable.
